First thing you need to start with is an instrument. Their are many to choose from. The most popular and common band instruments are.

I'll be starting on guitar!

First thing's first when it comes to learning guitar. You need a guitar, so what are your choices? Nylon or steel string, or acoustic or electric guitar?

If you haven't reached a decision on this matter yet, then you need to do some research first, click here for some information to help guide you through towards your guitar purchase.

OK, we have our guitar, [I will be giving this lesson, based on a steel string acoustic guitar only] and you are now ready for your first lesson, so you think. There are a couple of things we need to do first, to make sure that our guitar and ourselves are ready to play.

• choosing the correct strings
• tuning your guitar
• pen and paper
• how to hold the guitar
• to use a pic or not to use a pic?

I am going to show you four chord's to start with. They are the D, A, C and G MAJOR chord's.

To get a better understanding of what chords are and what they do, here is a basic look into music chords.

Below, are three charts, a hand chart, to guide you for placement of your fingers on the guitar, and two instructional charts for layout of the guitar neck, as looking at it from the top end where the strings are attached to the tuning pegs.

In the instructional charts, we will look at the first four frets that we will be working with, and the names of the open strings and what to do when you see an X on your guitar chart.

Strings [6 5 4 3 2 1], refer to the strings on the guitar from fattest [ 6 ] to thinnest [ 1 ].

I will also show video's for a more practical guide for each chord.

Always keep in mind not to press down heavily on the strings as this will cause stress on your hand and pain in your fingers. It only needs to be enough to touch the metal fret bars.
